You need not depend on local meals served by platform vendors or pantry cars of trains. Of course, it is your choice, if you wish to buy food from them; but you have another choice…a better one for that matter.

Hot meals served at your seat

Gone are the days when you had to contend with whatever was served to you from the train’s pantry car. Many times, pantry officials overcharged you. Left with no choice and with your stomach growling with hunger, you had to pay whatever they charged. All this is history.

With the new Catering Policy in place from February 2017, the Railway Ministry has displayed a menu card for train passengers. It contains food items and their prices. You must not pay more than what is mentioned in the menu rate card. You can avail yourselves the benefit of Rail Delivery Train.

It all started with 45 major stations throughout the country. The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) roped in major food brands like KFC, Pizza Hut, Haldiram’s, Dominos, Chaayos, Food Panda, and more to provide hot meals to passengers in trains. The idea was to make it easier for passengers to get meals.

IRCTC’s food plazas and Jan Aahar outlets are also involved in this service. You can order meals online and pay online too. You can also pay in cash at the time of food delivery. E-catering service makes it highly convenient for passengers to get food of their choice. Food is of high quality. You can choose brands and order your favorite dish.

3-step procedure

·       Log on to IRCTC’s e-catering section and choose from more than 500 food vendors.

·       Select the menu.

·       Place an order.

An extra step is for those who wish to pay online. Otherwise, you can pay in cash when your food gets delivered to you at your berth.

No-fuss food

E-catering is a no-fuss service. You get what you order – simple. You get no chance to complain for two reasons. First, the food is from the country’s top food brands and they are already renowned for their top quality customer service. Second, the food is tasty and prepared in hygienic conditions. After all, the brands have a reputation to keep.

It is time to say goodbye to unhygienic, boring pantry cars of trains. They not only overcharge you, but also provide mediocre quality meals. This is what has been observed by supervisors and complained by passengers.

It is not wrong to say that e-catering service is a result of burgeoning complaints by passengers and sheer carelessness of pantry car officials. They failed to provide good quality, decent meals to travelers. As a result, the Railway Ministry had to intervene and come out with a better plan of letting passengers take control of their meals.
